FAQs

Does everyone who snores have sleep apnea?

Snoring and sleep apnea are common partners, but snoring is not always a tell-tale sign of sleep apnea. A custom oral appliance can allow your airway to widen, preventing you from snoring and experiencing episodes of sleep apnea. Our oral appliances are comfortable to wear and work by positioning the lower jaw slightly forward, minimizing any obstructions of throat tissue in your airway.

Can you have sleep apnea without snoring?

Snoring can accompany sleep apnea, but it is not a symptom everyone has. Because of this, participating in a sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea is recommended. If it is confirmed you have sleep apnea, we will provide treatment recommendations.

Is Solea pain-free?

Most patients report no pain or discomfort during this procedure, but some have said they feel a mild cold sensation. After the procedure some people experience a slight sore throat for no more than a day. Others report no discomfort at all. Many patients feel their airway is already more open immediately following the procedure.

Is Solea good for kids?

Yes. And because it’s a fast procedure that can be done in one appointment without the need for numbing shots, it’s a great solution for kids who snore. With little to no discomfort during and after the procedure, most kids can resume their active lifestyle immediately with no down time.

I’m pregnant. Is it OK to use Solea on me?

Yes, and since there is no need for numbing injections or pain relief following the procedure it is a great, safe solution for pregnant women.

How long will I be required to wear my mouth appliance?

Sleep apnea is a lifelong condition, therefore wearing a mouth appliance will probably be a lifelong therapy. However, if there are conditional factors that attribute to your snoring, you may be able to stop wearing your mouth appliance once those are addressed. Being overweight, for example, can lead to snoring due to excess throat tissue. If you lose weight, your snoring may stop and you will no longer need to wear your mouth appliance.

How often will my mouth appliance need to be replaced?

Due to the very durable hard acrylic material our mouth appliances are made from, they last quite a long time. With regular wear they can last 3-5 years. If you’re a teeth grinder, you may find you will need to replace yours more often due to excess wear and tear.

Will my mouth appliance make my mouth sore?

Most patients will adapt to the mouth appliance within a week. It does take a few days to get used to having a device in your mouth while you sleep. If your mouth is sore after a couple nights of use, it can be easily adjusted. The most common side effect is morning muscle soreness, but that usually goes away after a short period of time.

Is this covered by medical insurance?

Most insurance companies cover sleep apnea therapy including mouth appliance therapy. We’re happy to contact your insurance provider on your behalf to make sure you understand the details of your coverage.
